SOCSA presents the hillarious comdedy, Moon Over Buffalo!
If you enjoyed Noises Off and A Flea in Her Ear you will LOVE Moon Over Buffalo !! The laughs begin even before the curtain opens and never stop until the bows are taken. Carol Burnett starred in the 1995 Broadway production, directed by Tony Award winner Tom Moore.
This backstage farce, tells the story of Charlotte and George Hay, an acting couple who are not exactly the Lunts. While on tour in Buffalo in 1953, in Cyrano de Bergerac ("the revised, one nostril version") and Noel Coward's "Private Lives," fate gives these thespians one last shot at starring roles in the movie version of "The Twilight of the Scarlet Pimpernel." Missing actors, mistaken identities, a surprise appearance by Frank Capra and a deaf Grandma make this a fast paced comedy not to be missed !

SOCSA presents the Classical Broadway Musical, 42nd Street!
LIVE BAND! TALENTED DANCERS! CLASSIC BROADWAY SHOW TUNES!!
42nd Street tells the timeless, inspiring tale of small Allentown, PA, Peggy Sawyer's (Jane Papageorge) rise from chorus girl to Broadway star. With a LIVE BAND, dozens of tap dancers and a great set, this is a MUST SEE production. 42nd Street includes these classic songs: "We're in the Money", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Lullaby of Broadway", "Shuffle Off To Buffalo", "Keep Young and Beautiful" and the spectacular title number, "42nd Street" danced down a flight of steps that lights up as brightly as the faces of the talented SOCSA student cast.
Julian Marsh (Geoff Kaufman), a successful Broadway director, produces a new musical. The money comes from a rich old man, who is in love with the star of the show, Dorothy Brock (Julie Wickstrom). But she doesn't reply to his love, because she is still in love with her old boyfriend. At the night before the premiere, Dorothy breaks her ankle, and one of the chorus girls, Peggey Sawyer tries to take over her part.

11 year old Annie (Freshman, Shannon Tweed) is in an orphanage, presided over by Miss Hannigan (Junior, Emma Werderman), who keeps the little girl orphans in line by bullying and threatening them. The girls are ever hopeful that they will find parents and happiness while Miss Hannigan is unhappy with her situation. Annie decides to escape to find her parents, running into the people made homeless because of the Great Depression. However, she is returned to the orphanage. Grace Farrell (Senior, Michelle Guidas), Warbucks' assistant, picks her to live in Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks' (Senior, Jeremy Knappe) palatial home for the Christmas holidays.
Although initially uncomfortable with each other, Annie and Daddy Warbucks soon come to love each other. Warbucks wants to adopt her, but Annie insists that her parents will come for her. Over a radio show and with the help of the community, Warbucks offers a reward for the parents. Miss Hannigan and her brother, Rooster (Junior, Ramzi Jneid) and his slightly ditzy girlfriend, Lily St. Regis (Senior, Jenifer Gross), scheme to pretend to be the parents and collect the reward. When they are found out, it is revealed that Annie's parents have died. Warbucks and Annie become a family.

Come enjoy the chilling Fall Play, "Spoon River Anthology", under the direction of Instructor and Drama Director of SOCSA at Dana Hills High School, Patricia Sexton and performed by her talented and award winning SOCSA Drama Students at Dana Hills High School.
Just in time for Halloween, the Spoon River Anthology is a collection of unusual, short, free form poems that collectively describe the life of the fictional small town of Spoon River. Each poem is an epitaph of a dead citizen, delivered by the dead themselves. The stories will take you through all emotions and get you in the Halloween spirit.
Though the spectre of death is omnipresent over the characters of Spoon River Anthology, the play is ultimately about life, not death. As one of the characters articulates late in the show, "It takes life to love life," and that is perhaps the best message to take away. This play will force you to examine the lives of its characters and perhaps encourage you to look at your own life more closely as well. A scarey thought indeed.

Come to SOCSA's Summer Musical, Guys and Dolls under the direction of SOCSA's talented Musical Theatre, Acting and Dance Teacher, Ms. Brittany Longdon, featuring a talented cast of local emerging stars from Dana Hills High School SOCSA's Summer Musical Camp, featuring students and alumni from Dana Hills High School and San Clemente High School, as well as St. Edwards, Niguel Hills, Malcolm Elementary and Marco Forster Middle School. Featuring the talented SOCSA orchestra under the direction of the great Mr. Steven Wade (see list of instrumentalists below).
Take a step back in time as SOCSA's Guys and Dolls wows you with that old school New York charm, stunning dance choreography and many famous songs such as "Luck Be a Lady", "Guys and Dolls" and "Havana" (see full list of musical numbers below). Guys and Dolls originally premiered in 1950 at 46th Street Theatre and in 1952 it received Tony Award for Best Musical. Since then, many revivals of Guys and Dolls have premiered all over the world and it will now be in your own backyard, so invite your friends, relatives and neighbors!
Set against the color of New York City's highlights and low life, Guys and Dolls is an entertaining fable of love, marriage and temperance on Damon Runyon's Broadway. The story of Guys and Dolls sets Nathan Detroit (Daniel Filippi), operator of a legendary floating crap game, evading marriage to Miss Adelaide (Jane Papageorge), his chorus girl fiancee of fourteen years, against high rolling Sky Masterson (Brian Ivie) who revels in his reputation as a notorious gambler and womanizer. But when Nathan bets Sky that even he cannot sweep Miss Sarah Brown (Leah Bray), the prim mission lass, off to Havana, everyone gets more than they bargained for. SOCSA's talented cast (See full cast list below) of Guys and Dolls creatively portrays the story, as well as the songs and dances.
This amazing SOCSA Summer Musical of Guys and Dolls is sure to sell-out, Nicely-nicely, thank you... so buy your tickets online today!

DANA HILLS' SOCSA SHOWCASE AT SAN JUAN HILLS HIGH SCHOOL? What's up with that?
With over 400 students in the SOCSA Academy, finding an affordable venue that could house the potential of 900+ seats needed, was a challenge this year's SOCSA Foundation Board took very seriously. Thankfully, the new 475-seat San Juan Hills High School Performing Arts Center in San Juan Capistrano is available for SOCSA to use for this year's Showcase at almost no cost to SOCSA since this is part of the Capistrano Unified School District.
TWO PERFORMANCE TIMES & ONE ART EXHIBITION? What's up with that?
Both the 2pm and 7pm Showcase performances will be the exact same program allowing you to select the time and cost to fit your budget. In light of the current economic hard times we are all experiencing, we have made the 2pm Matinee performance a lower cost to help give you a more affordable choice. However, Showcase is a large fundraiser for SOCSA and we needed to make one of the two shows a higher price to help raise funds for arts education at SOCSA.
ITALIAN DINNER BUFFET FOR ONLY $20 AT SHOWCASE? Now that sounds wonderful!!
Starting at 5:00pm on the Campus of San Juan Hills High School, just outside the theater, you will be able to enjoy an amazingly flavorful Italian dinner from one of Orange County's finest, Renato's Catering, under the direction of European-certified Executive Chef Donato Di Florio. Each meal sold in advance will help raise funds for SOCSA and you will get to enjoy a fabulous dinner buffet menu that includes Chicken Piccata, Penne Pasta w/ Pink Sauce, Farfalle Primavera, Grilled Vegetables, Mixed Green Salad and Rolls. NOTE: You must buy dinner tickets in advance, no dinners will be sold at the event.

SOCSA's SPRING MUSICAL: ONCE UPON A MATTRESS IS A SMASH HIT!
If you thought you knew the story of "The Princess and The Pea", you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, that for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken's love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal alter post haste? Or that, in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you'll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again!

'Once Upon a Mattress': A Contemporary Take on an Old Tale By Sara Gold, Copy Editor A re-print from the April 3, 2009 issue of the Dana Hills High School "The Paper" DHHSPaper.com Hans Christian Andersen's "The Princess and the Pea" is brought to life on the stage, when Princess Winnifred the Woebegone (Rachel Rothman) declares herself to be the perfect bride for young Prince Dauntless (Seb Arrieta). Despite her odd, homely appearance, Winnifred charms the prince and his kingdom with her charisma and compassion. Although Queen Aggravaine (Michelle Guidas), the prince's ill-contented mother, deviously attempts to prevent their marriage, true love conquers all. For many SOCSA graduating seniors, "Once Upon a Mattress" will be their last high school production, and they have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. "This musical is espe- cially fun to perform, because we, as actors, are creating a lot of the humor, versus the playwright," said senior Sindre Karevoll, who will be playing the role of the comical King Sextimus. Rothman, a senior, said, "It is such an honor to play the amazing part of Winnifred. It's a great way to close the year." "Even though being a lead takes more responsibility, I've definitely grown as a performer," said Guidas, who is excited to be playing the part of the malevolent queen. "My favorite part will be when the whole show comes together during the technical and dress rehearsals the days before opening night. Even though they can be tedious, they really show the effort that has been put forth by the actors and everyone involved." Director Pattie Sexton commented, "It is rewarding to get to know the kids on a different level than during class time." "I commend the students for putting in countless hours of their own time after school and on weekends. They have had great patience during rehearsals," Sexton added. "Once Upon a Mattress" will include energetic dances and musical numbers in addition to light-hearted humor. "Because it's a comedy, the show will definitely appeal to high school students," said senior Taylor Wahl, who will play the role of kind-hearted Lady Larken. The musical also presents a theme that viewers of all ages will be able to relate to. "The show sends a universal message that it's good to be different and that people will love you for who you are," explained Wahl. Tickets for this fun-filled musical event can be purchased through SOCSA's online box office (www.socsarts.org). |

The Women is a "Mean Girls" or "Desperate Housewives" type show about the overly dramatic lives of a handful of wealthy New York women. This play is s a comedy of manners and an acidic commentary on the pampered lives and power struggles of various wealthy Manhattan socialites and up-and-comers and the gossip that propels and damages their relationships. While men frequently are the subject of their lively discussions and play an important role in the action on-stage, they are strictly characters mentioned, but never seen.
This is an Actors' Rep Class show that will be featured ONE NIGHT ONLY! The Actors' Rep class students have worked very hard on this play and the show is very funny, witty and not too foreign due to our Orange County backgrounds. :-)
Oh and btw, IT'S FREE! (but a tip jar will be out for donations to SOCSA)

Sultry mistresses and dashing suitors abound in this exoticl and satirical romp through 1900's Paris. When an anonymous letter provokes a hilarious chain of mistaken identities, seductive trickery runs hysterically amuck, and the sultry, shadowed rooms of a scandalous Parisian hotel will never be quite the same.
Laura Chandler believes that her husband Victor is having an affair with another woman, and tricks him into meeting her at a local "love" motel in order to catch him in the act. In doing so, she involves a huge range of characters, including a Tom Jones wannabe of questionable sexuality, a lascivious doctor, the owner of the Pussycat Motel, a very jealous Spanish nobleman and his wife, and a drunken porter named Potts, who happens to be Victor Chandler's doppelganger.
This satirical play will have you rolling in the aisle with laughter! And may even make you blush...
A REVIEW OF "A FLEA IN HER EAR", SOCSA's SPRING PLAY
Closing night is tonight... Indulge your senses in the funniest play to hit Dana Point in Decades!
- By Alan Wickstrom
Do you like British Comedy? Have a dry sense of humor? Well, then you love SOCSA's Spring Play, "A Flea in Her Ear".
My daughter Julie and I went to see SOCSA's Spring Play for the first time Friday night and it is truly the funniest play I have ever seen! I plan on attending Saturday night's show to pick up on all the lines I missed while wiping the tears of laughter off my face this first night.
Whatever you do, don't miss the last night of "A Flea in Her Ear" tonight, Saturday, March 21st in the Porthole Theater of Dana Hills High School. Online ticket sales are closed, but there are still great seats available that will be sold at the door starting at 6pm on Saturday, March 21st for closing night 7pm performance for just $12 for adults and $10 for students or senior citizens.
Directed by the talented SOCSA drama and dance teacher, Ms. Brittany Longdon, "A Flea in Her Ear" will have you laughing so hard, while twisting and turning the plot so many times it will make your head spin (in a good way). Ms. Longdon is not only an amazing SOCSA teacher, but is also a SOCSA Alum, class of 2000. She took a challenging comedy and moulded a select list of talented SOCSA student actors into what I consider to be the funniest comedy I have every seen on a stage anywhere. Ms. Longdon knows the Porthole like the back of her and and transports her audience to the early time and place with this dazzling production.
Set in 1907 Paris, France, at both the French Estate of Victor Emmanuel Chandebise (Justin LaForge) and the scandalous Hotel Casablanca, this play will take you back to a less innocent time when the best form of entertainment was to... well, find the entertainment of another. Justin's honed acting skills as both Victor and Poche (see below) are that of a veteran actor and he really brings a certain regalness to Victor's character, while maintaining a great sense of humor. His 2nd character, Poche, is described at the end of this review.
The elegant Raymonde Chandebise (Paige Simon), after years of wedded bliss, begins to doubt the fidelity of her husband, Victor, who suddenly has become disinterested in his wife or, as Raymonde puts it, "after having been a husband--and what a husband!--suddenly stopped--like that! Between one day and the next." She does not realize, however, that his behavior is due to a nervous condition, and she begins to suspect that he has taken a mistress. Paige played the elegant French socialite with outstanding grace and jocularity, while bringing a sense of style and class to the evening's craziness.
Raymonde's suspicions really get the comedic ball rolling as she confides her doubts in Victor to an old friend, Lucienne (Dominique Brillon), who eggs Raymonde along as the entire cast takes us on an deliciously witty ride, just like a crazy taxi ride through the old narrow streets of Paris. Dominque portrays her bright smiling, slightly devilish character with grace, style and great comedic timing.
Lucienne's husband, Carlos Homenides de Histangua (Michael Groover), is a passionate and violent Spaniard who's center stage entrance during the first act is one I will not soon forget. I laughed so hard as he stole the stage with his charm, wit and impassioned genuine Spanish humor. He also suspects his wife is not being true to their vows and pledges to kill the man she has taken. Michael, I'm so amazed what a wonderful actor you have become... you can play any role you set your mind to and we'll be at all your future productions as you leave the SOCSA program this year.
Each actor in SOCSA's "A Flea in Her Ear" fit their parts perfectly as this play's casting was outstanding:
Tournel (Seb Arietta) displays all the classic behavior of a seasoned comedic actor. Simply put, he is brilliant. I can't wait to see Seb on SNL or some stand-up comedy club someday soon.
Camille (Ryan Vescera), Victor's Nephew, steals the show with his masterful speech impediment, comedic timing and legendary well honed acting skills.
Dr. Finache (Jason Roeder), Victor's doctor, is the "Professor from Gilligan's Island" type character who mixes logic with old time scandalous fun, with unequaled deep tones of dry humor.
Antoinette (Michelle Colston), Victor's household servant and wife of the butler, who's eyes and bouncing moves light up the stage as she flirts with Camille.
Ettienne (Sindre Karevoll), Antoinette's husband and the household butler, just drips with dry humor and fantastic physical slapstick, despite his character's bum leg and a cane.
Eugenie (Natalie Testa), a sultry french maid in the hotel, provides a classic french female "court jester" type character who is being chased by an Englishman.
Ferralloin (Aston Reyes), the hotel manager who runs the Hotel Casablanca like a general and instigates many satirical moments.
Olympe (Emily Paddock), an ex lady of the night, who's calmness and tailor-made French charm really made the hotel scene an uproarious event.
Rugby (Jeremy Knappe), the sole Englishman among the French, provided small windows of giant British Humor. His body language and comedic timing were so funny, filled with formal British wit.
Baptiste (Shelby Kwait), the drunken aunt of Ferralloin, who's clown-like make-up and animated body language absolutely stole the show as she bounced around the set of the hotel.
Poche (Justin LaForge), a drunken hotel porter who looks exactly like Victor and the two are often confused. Justin so masterfully provided two very distinct characters in one play that I was waiting for both of them to appear on stage at the same time. Simply brilliant acting for this rising young star.
The Crew of "A Flea in Her Ear" were outstanding!
Joe LaMasa, Set Designer, has once again brought Broadway quality to the sets of the Porthole Theater. Their special effects in the Hotel's bedroom scene will have you "spinning" with laughter! Thank you Joe, for your MANY years of quite dedication to the SOCSA stage.
Keeran Reidling, Costume Designer, transforms these "Generation Y" teenagers into French, Spanish and English ladies and gentleman. Very stylish, authentic and classic tailor made fashions graced the Porthole stage once again, thanks to you!
Neil Sampson, Technical Advisor, and Ashley Dunnicliffe, Technical Designer, once again bring their seasoned geekness to the Porthole stage, keeping all that is techy, running smooth as silk.
Becky Paddock, Parent Producer, makes sure all these student actors stay in check, while feeding them and providing long hours of volunteer time to help where needed to make each performance a great success. Many thanks to Becky for again producing another great SOCSA production!!
Emily Daniel, Stage Manager and Brittny Witherspoon, Asst. Stage Manager, did a fantastic job of making each scene flow like a well oiled machine.
Jon Bon, Sophia Esseily and Gage Greenspan, Stage Crew, kept the rooms spinning with fast and flawless set changes.
John Killebrew, Tech Master, did a masterful job on tech.
Dylan DelPrado, Lights, and Victoria Capo, Sound brought a classic radiant light and accordion sound to the French estate and hotel scenes.
Jennifer Chambers, Props, Brianna Baetz, Costume Mistress and Mackenzie Hewitt, Ali Russell & Sydney Schuman, Costume Crew provided critical support to the actor's ability to pull of their parts with style and accessories.
Make-up Mistress, Samantha Bentson, transformed each character, both young and old, into award winning, authentic French, Spanish and English characters. Sam is a true artist of the face palette with an amazingly fashionable hairstyle! ;-)
Make-up Crew, Kelsey McKown, provided valuable assistance to art of makeup.
Ramzi Jneid, House Manager and Spencer Fields, Sharkey Ihara, Serene Jneid, Erin Rathbun, Rachel Rothman & Brandon Truman, House Crew, provided warm hospitality, hot coffee, cold drinks and delicious desserts (burp) that were enjoyed by all.

SOCSA presents "unleashed" the Dance Concert. SOCSA dance students will dazzle you with their amazing performance.
If you love dance, you'll be thrilled by the choreography and beauty in this annual production featuring over 40 SOCSA dance students. A variety of works will be presented from modern ballet to hip-hop.
SOCSA offers not only technical training for the serious high school dance student, but it offers practical training as well. Students are trained formally in the major of dance through the genres of ballet, tap, jazz and modern. Once students successfully enter into their third year of training, the student's jury to become a member of the SOCSA Dance Company. Thus, the students will acquire two years of experience in dancing choreographed works in a company environment, which will include not only dance training and choreographic experiences with guest artists and dance faculty, but practice and execution of theatrical design in the areas of lighting, costume, makeup and scenery. The program will address all the needs of the student for directly entering into a career in dance, a program or institution of higher learning, or just simply for the appreciation and love toward the art of dance.

SOCSA's FALL MUSICAL: BYE BYE BIRDIE IS A SMASH HIT!
GREAT SEATS STILL AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR FOR THURSDAY NIGHT'S PERFORMANCE (Dec 4th)
FUN OPENING NIGHT PHOTOS
This classic 60s musical, "Bye Bye Birdie," featuring 34 talented and award winning SOCSA students from Dana Hills High School with an exuberant soundtrack played by a 20-piece live band, under the direction of SOCSA Band Director, Steve Wade, and Orchestra teacher, Sonja Hammad, comes to the Porthole stage at Dana Hills High School on December 3, 4, 6, 11, 12 & 13 at 7 pm. Tickets are $12 for Adults and $10 for Senior Citizens or Students and tickets are available online now or by calling the SOCSA office at 949.240.1994. Tickets will also be available 1-hour before each performance at the door. All proceeds go to support arts education at Dana Hills High School.
SOCSA's performance of "Bye Bye Birdie" is directed by SOCSA musical theatre teacher, Brittany Longdon, a SOCSA graduate, class of 2000. Miss Longdon had the privilege of performing in SOCSA's first production of "Bye Bye Birdie," on the Porthole stage back in 1999. Nine years later, she felt this timeless classic should make its way once again to SOCSA's audiences.
"Bye Bye Birdie" is a fun musical for the entire family. When Elvis-like rock star Conrad Birdie (Aston Reyes) is drafted into the military, teens across the U.S. unite for a contest -- the winner will kiss Birdie before he leaves. Kim (played by 2008 1st place winner of Stars of Tomorrow vocal competition, Erika Peterson) is the lucky girl, much to the chagrin of her boyfriend (Ryan Vescera) and parents (Michael Groover and Emily Paddock).
Justin LaForge and Dominique Brillon play Albert, a songwriter, and Rosie, his long-suffering girlfriend, kept from marrying by his mother, Mrs. Peterson (Julie Wickstrom). You'll leave the theatre whistling tunes like "Telephone Hour," "Put on a Happy Face," "Kids" and the title track. FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY!

"Whoever is teaching your students drama at Dana Hills High School deserves to win Teacher of the Year. And just so you know this is not a proud parent of one of the performers let me tell you a little story.
My wife and I met 30 years ago while attending summer school at Dana Hills so we are kind of loyal to the school. It's a long story but we went our separate way during college then reunited about 3 years ago and now, what do you know, we are finally happily married... CLICK HERE TO READ MORE..."

JUST IN TIME FOR HALLOWEEN, SOCSA PRESENTS AN AMAZING PRODUCTION OF "THE CRUCIBLE"
Come see Arthur Miller's exploration of the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, The Crucible, as performed by talented SOCSA students from Dana Hills High School, under the direction of SOCSA Drama Teacher, Pattie Sexton, at the Porthole Theater on October 23, 24 and 25 at 7 pm.When Abigail Williams (Taylor Wahl) is held in suspicion of witchcraft, she in turn levels charges against John (Aston Reyes) and Elizabeth Proctor (Paige Simon). Sara Standen, as Anne Putnam, and a talented cast of SOCSA Juniors and Seniors give a fantastic performance you won't want to miss.
Using the historical subject of the Salem Witch trials, Arthur Miller's play The Crucible (written in 1953) presents an allegory for events in contemporary America. The Salem Witch Trials took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692, and were based on the accusations of a twelve-year-old girl named Anne Putnam (Sara Standen). Putnam claimed that she had witnessed a number of Salem's residents holding black sabbaths and consorting with Satan. Based on these accusations, an English-American clergyman named Rev. Parris (Jason Roeder) spearheaded the prosecution of dozens of alleged witches in the Massachusetts colony. Nineteen people were hanged and one pressed to death over the following two years.
Tickets for The Crucible are $12 for adults, $10 for students/senior citizens. Last minute tickets will be available for sale starting at 6:00pm just prior to the performances at the SOCSA Box Office at Dana Hills High School. All proceeds go to support arts education for the SOCSA drama program at Dana Hills High School.
